Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista faced many of the challenges that today’s aging healthcare facilities encounter: inadequate patient care space, a complicated campus layout, and a stark institutional environment.
The 42,000 square foot building expansion re-oriented the existing front entrance and lobby, created welcoming waiting and courtyard spaces, and provided state-of-the-art emergency and intensive care departments. A horizontal connector spine links the existing hospital and medical office building to the expansion project. This organizational path will provide a direct connection for future buildings in the master plan. In addition, our phasing expertise at Scripps Chula Vista allowed for the relocation of operations during the construction period in a very efficient manner.
Through simplicity of the architecture, the rotunda, sensitive use of natural light, interior finishes and colors, and numerous original artwork installations, the building’s design not only creates a healing environment, but also directly relates to the community that it serves. Together with Scripps, we met the challenge. Scripps Chula Vista is an integral part of the South Bay San Diego Community and the patients who rely on the facility for outstanding care and service.
