With the success of cardiac catheterization treatment as an unparalleled diagnostic and treatment tool, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla is expanding their existing cath lab to accommodate growing patient volumes. Adding two new cath labs, for a total of five, and one new Electro-physiology Lab, for at total of two, and a brand new prep/recovery room will allow this 15,800 square foot facility to satisfy community needs.
A design challenge in this project was to create soothing spaces for patients, while providing highly functional spaces for staff. The design supports staff by offering “offstage” areas that are as well designed as the main waiting room. The design supports patients and families with a “clear flow” concept which reflects the goal of cardiac treatment i.e.: unobstructed veins and arteries. The fluid layout of the walls and ceilings literally eases a patient and staff through the suite, from check in to recovery. The interior design utilizes water imagery and a natural color palette to visually embody the concept.
